Study finds many agent memory systems underperform naive RAG, introducing the concept of memory tax

The paper evaluates dedicated agent memory systems against direct retrieval from raw history across multiple benchmarks and model backbones. It finds many memory systems have negative net value and names the overlooked losses memory tax. Code and results are promised as open source.
