Study finds higher reasoning effort often fails tasks lower effort solves and costs more

Measurements across proprietary and open-weight models on four benchmarks find higher effort can cost up to 42x more on easy tasks. Starting at low effort and escalating after a verified failure matched or beat top effort at lower cost for most proprietary models.
